Qigong: ("chee-GONG") A component of traditional Chinese medicine that combines movement, meditation, and regulation of breathing to enhance the flow of qi (an ancient term given to what is believed to be vital energy) in the body. Medical Qigong is reported to reduce stress, build stamina, increase vitality, and enhance the immune system. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic and digestive functions.
People will come into my office and say "Wow! You teach Qigong Exercises"; not exactly. Medical Qigong is not Tai Chi. Though not far off from Tai Chi, it holds a lot of the same concepts. With Tai Chi, you are correcting the imbalances in your own body through special exercises. In Medical Qigong your practitioner went to college to learn how to correct these imbalances for you. We all can feel energy, even you. However, we are taught on a deeper level to feel this energy, what it means and how to correct it. The energy of a healthy body feels totally different than someone with dis-ease.
Medical Qigong is the Traditional Chinese Medicine Branch of Energy Medicine. Medical Qigong has been used in China for over 5000 years. It is a complete system that recognizes the root causes of symptoms or dis-ease and works with the patient as a whole. It is rooted in the ancient Taoist philosophy view that the body and mind interface with one another and have the capacity to balance or unbalance each other. Qigong may be used alone, or adjunct to Western medicine. Qigong has been used successfully to help difficult, stubborn, and sometimes chronic conditions that do not respond well to other types of medicine. Some of the Great TMC Masters in China find that children, the elderly, people in frail health, and highly sensitive people tend to respond better to Medical Qigong than other TCM branches.
